There has been a growing shift toward recognizing indigenous models of instruction as valid and valuable educational approaches. Today, many academic programs around the world are beginning to integrate these models, some more prominently than others.

Members of indigenous communities often emphasize the importance of preserving and practicing traditional ways of learning. These native approaches to teaching and knowledge-sharing are increasingly viewed by postmodern scholars as effective, especially when aiming to create more culturally responsive education. Such methods benefit both indigenous and non-indigenous students by promoting understanding and respect for indigenous customs, beyond the typical Western framework of reading, writing, and math.

Indigenous education, in particular, focuses on teaching cultural knowledge, values, and methods through both formal and informal learning environments. The revival and incorporation of these educational systems are often seen as responses to the erosion of traditional knowledge caused by colonialism, globalization, and modernity.

Many indigenous communities are actively working to reclaim and revitalize their languages and customs. In doing so, they strengthen the academic engagement and success of indigenous students—ensuring the survival and continuity of their cultural identity.
